Castle Campbell Dollar

Castle Campbell is a 15th century fortress that is dramatically situated above Dollar Glen on a high mound with steep ravines on 3 sides. Your first sight of this fairy-tale castle among rich woodland, will take your breath away!

There is plenty to see at this castle, plus a fascinating history to discover, and a picturesque garden to explore. Find out about the important people who have visited the castle, such as Mary Queen of Scots, and John Knox, a fiery protestant preacher, whose pulpit is still visible in the garden. The tower house castle is one of the best preserved in Scotland, and probably one of the most dramatically positioned too!

Discover how this imposing ruin was built in the early 15th century, and was originally called Castle Glume, until it passed through marriage to Colin Campbell, who changed its name. The Campbell family lived there for the next 200 years, but it seems they got tired of all those steps and moved to a fine townhouse beside Stirling Castle!

Please be aware that the castle courtyard is cobbled, and that many of the steps on the stairways have worn away over time, but there is a fixed handrail to use.
